Letter from IPNA President

Letter from IPNA President

Dear Members & Friends,

The events of the last several weeks which continue to unfold, are unprecedented. IPNA is monitoring the developments around the world related to COVID-19 and we are committed to the health and wellbeing of our membership, your families, and the patients and families you serve.  We are thinking of our extended family and community and we are here as a helpful resource to you.

IPNA continues our mission to address low resource areas. Just last week Henry Brehm organized IPNA partnering with a nonprofit organization to screen 300 plus children at risk for chronic kidney disease (CKD). The screening took place in schools in the La Democracia municipality of Guatemala. Council member, Dr. Melvin Bonilla-Felix, Professor and Chairman, Department of Pediatrics at the University of Puerto Rico travelled to Guatemala to lead this effort on behalf of IPNA. He teamed with IPNA member, Dr.  Randall Lou-Meda and his staff from FUNDANIER and I am happy to report that Melvin is back home safe.

There are several resources on the virus and for treating patients with compromised immune systems. Please refer to your specific county’s guidelines and The World Health Organization is an excellent source which offers translation to six languages.

The important thing to remember is you are not alone. Our work with patients is vital in these challenging times and we must also work harder to find meaningful ways to stay connected. Stay safe, stay sane. Let’s replace handshakes and hugs with emails and phone calls to share information as we continue our important work.

Warm Regards,

Yap Hui Kim, M.D.
